Whirlpool Smart Electronic Dryers
25 fault codes documented
AF (restricted air flow) - Lint screen or vent issue
The 'AF' diagnostic code signifies restricted airflow, which can be caused by a clogged lint screen, a blocked or damaged vent system, or a vent that is improperly installed. The dryer will continue to run, but efficiency will be reduced.
Blue Smart Grid icon blinking — App or Smart Grid functions not working
The blue Smart Grid icon is slowly blinking, indicating that while the dryer is connected to your home Wi-Fi, the Whirlpool™ app or Smart Grid features are not fully functional or connected to the service.
Clicking noise — On gas dryers during operation
A clicking sound is audible on gas dryers during operation. This sound is a normal part of the gas valve opening and closing as it regulates gas flow.
Dryer will not heat — Clothes remain cold after a cycle
The dryer drum turns, but the air inside remains cold, and clothes are not getting dry due to a lack of heat. This can be caused by power issues or incorrect settings.
Dryer will not run — Cycle does not start
When attempting to start a cycle, the dryer does not begin operation. This can be due to a simple oversight like an open door or a power supply issue.
Dryer will not turn off — Stuck in Pause mode after opening door
The dryer remains in Pause mode and will not turn off after the door was opened before the Wrinkle Shield™ option finished, rather than completely stopping.
F# E# (Service Code) - Dryer requires service
If a code beginning with 'F' (like F1 E1, F3 E1) appears on the display, alternating between 'F#' and 'E#', it indicates that the dryer control has detected an internal problem that needs professional attention.
Humming or whining noise — During Steam cycles
A humming or whining sound is heard specifically when a Steam cycle is selected. This sound comes from the dryer's internal water pump operating.
Invalid Keypress sound - Download & Go button touched without a cycle ready
If you hear an 'Invalid Keypress' sound when touching the DOWNLOAD & GO button, it indicates that there is no Specialty or My Cycle ready for selection from the Whirlpool™ app. The indicator light above the button will not be lit.
L2 (low or no line voltage) - Heater not turning on
The 'L2' diagnostic code indicates a low or no line voltage condition, meaning there might be an issue with your home's power supply preventing the dryer's heater from operating. The dryer will continue to run without heat. This code only shows during initial installation.
Load too hot - Removed before cooldown
If the load feels excessively hot when removed from the dryer, it may have been taken out before the cooling portion of the drying cycle could complete. This phase is crucial for safely reducing garment temperature.
Load too hot - Timed Dry with high temperature
The load might be too hot if you are using a Timed Dry cycle with a temperature setting that is too high for the garments. Timed Dry cycles do not have sensors to prevent overdrying like automatic cycles.
Long drying times or clothes not dry — Clothes remain damp after cycle
The dryer takes an unusually long time to dry clothes, or items remain damp even after a full cycle. This often indicates restricted airflow, improper installation, or incorrect settings.
Odors after steam cycle - Water is not properly connected
If clothes retain odors after a steam cycle, it could indicate an issue with the water supply to the dryer for steam generation. The dryer requires a proper water connection for these cycles to function correctly.
Odors left in garments after wearing
If garments retain odors even after drying, particularly those worn previously, the standard drying cycle may not be sufficient to remove them. This often happens with wrinkle-free cottons, blends, knits, and synthetics.
PF (power failure) - Drying cycle interrupted
The dryer display shows 'PF' indicating that the drying cycle was interrupted due to a power outage or a temporary loss of power to the appliance. The current cycle cannot resume automatically.
Rattling or vibrating noise — During dryer operation
A distinct rattling or vibrating sound is heard while the dryer is running. This can indicate an obstruction, improper installation, or an unbalanced load.
Remote Start cancelled - Interaction with dryer after setting
Once Remote Start has been enabled, any physical interaction with the dryer itself, such as opening the door or adjusting settings, will cause the Remote Start mode to cancel. The dryer will not start remotely.
Remote Start not set - Wi-Fi indicator blinks then goes out (no Wi-Fi connection)
When attempting to set Remote Start, if the Wi-Fi indicator blinks for 2 seconds and then goes out, it means there is currently no active Wi-Fi connection for the dryer. Remote Start cannot be enabled without a network connection.
Smart Grid status indicators are OFF - Whirlpool app service temporarily unavailable
If the Smart Grid status indicators (Blue or Amber) are completely off, it means the Whirlpool™ app service is momentarily unavailable. The dryer cannot currently communicate its energy demand status.
Steam Refresh cycle interrupted by Smart Grid event
Your Steam Refresh cycle might have been stopped prematurely due to an event from your Smart Grid system. This indicates that the dryer responded to energy demand signals from your utility.
Thumping noise — After period of disuse
A thumping sound is heard from the dryer, particularly if it has not been used for some time. This is considered normal during initial operation.
Wi-Fi status indicator blinks rapidly then off - Dryer failed to connect to router
If the Wi-Fi status indicator blinks rapidly for 2 seconds and then turns off after trying to connect, it means the dryer and your home wireless router failed to establish a connection within the allotted time.
Wi-Fi icon OFF — Dryer not connected to home Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi icon on the dryer's control panel is off, indicating that the dryer is not currently connected to your home Wi-Fi network. This can happen if the dryer is in standby, has never been set up, or lost its connection.
Wi-Fi icon does not light — Dryer Wi-Fi unable to activate
After pressing the CONNECT button, the Wi-Fi icon does not light up or blink, suggesting an internal issue preventing the dryer from initiating a Wi-Fi connection.
