Code 24-58 5V PCM Power Out of Range Lockout — Loss of 5V DC power to the VFD

Carrier · Air Conditioners & Heat Pumps

What does 24-58 mean?

The 5V DC power supplied from the PCM to the VFD through the communication harness is interrupted or out of range. If this voltage is not restored, the system will shut down. This 5VDC is shared with pressure transducers.

Common Causes

  • Interrupted 5V DC supply to VFD.
  • Faulty VFD.
  • Damaged communication harness.
  • Short in a connected sensor's harness.
  • Faulty PCM board.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Disconnect the PCM to VFD communication harness (technician step).

  2. 2

Measure voltage between pin 3 (GND) and pin 4 (+5V DC) at the VFD connection end of the harness (technician step).

  3. 3

If voltage is present, reconnect the harness, power cycle the unit, and check if the fault persists; if so, the VFD may require replacement.

  4. 4

If voltage is not present at the VFD end, check for voltage at the PCM header (technician step).

  5. 5

If voltage is not present at the PCM header, disconnect all other sensors from the PCM until the fault clears. The last disconnected sensor likely has a short in its harness.

  6. 6

If all sensors are disconnected and the fault is present (no 5VDC on PCM board), replace the PCM.
