Loads powered by grid, not battery or solar

Loads powered by grid, not battery or solar — Check battery SOC, limits, and relay test

SolarEdge · ESS Systems

What does Loads powered by grid, not battery or solar mean?

Your loads are being powered by the grid when you expect them to be powered by the battery or solar. This can happen for several reasons related to system configuration and battery status.

Common Causes

  • Battery State of Charge (SOC) is below the configured minimum limit.
  • A managed lithium battery has disabled discharging due to internal limits.
  • The ESS Relay test is pending or has not completed.
  • The grid code configuration may be disabling feed-in.
  • The unit's rocker switch is set to 'Charger-Only'.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check the battery SOC in the app or on the display; recharge if it's below the minimum limit.

  2. 2

Verify the 'Discharge Current Limit (DCL)' in the battery's parameters via the device list; ensure it's not set to zero.

  3. 3

Check the 'ESS Relay test' status; wait for it to complete or ensure the battery has enough charge to perform it.

  4. 4

Verify the rocker switch on the unit is set to 'On' (I position on MultiPlus-II) and not 'Charger-Only' (II position).

  5. 5

Consult VEConfigure settings related to grid codes and potential disabling of feed-in via aux inputs.

  6. 6

Temporarily disable Loss of Mains (LOM) detection in VEConfigure to rule it out as a cause.
