Waiting mode, green LED blinks

"Waiting" mode, green LED blinks - Inverter waiting to start due to low PV voltage or AC fault

SMA · Sunny Boy Series

What does Waiting mode, green LED blinks mean?

The SMA Sunny Boy is in 'Waiting' mode, and the green LED is blinking. This indicates that either the PV voltage from the solar array is currently too low to begin normal operation, or an AC fault was detected, causing a 5-minute delay before restarting.

Common Causes

  • Insufficient sunlight hitting the PV array
  • Low PV array voltage (e.g., early morning, late evening, cloudy weather)
  • Temporary AC grid fault causing startup delay.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Ensure any coverings placed over the PV array are removed, and check for any significant shading that might reduce sunlight.

  2. 2

Wait for sufficient sunlight to be available; the inverter requires adequate DC voltage to start operating.

  3. 3

Verify that the main AC circuit breaker for the Sunny Boy is switched on and there are no ongoing AC grid faults.

  4. 4

If the inverter remains in 'Waiting' mode for an extended period during adequate sunlight, contact SMA America for assistance.
