4-Way Valve Stuck

4-Way Valve Stuck — Hot gas not directed properly

Lennox · EL18KSLV Series Outdoor Units

What does 4-Way Valve Stuck mean?

The 4-way valve is responsible for directing hot gas. If it fails to shift correctly, temperature sensors will detect a problem and trigger an error code.

Common Causes

  • Debris lodged inside the valve body.
  • Failure of the electrical solenoid preventing the valve from shifting.
  • Incorrect refrigerant charge.
  • Other operating parameters not being met.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check for correct refrigerant charge and that all other operating parameters are met.

  2. 2

In heating mode, check for line voltage to the solenoid coil after the time delay.

  3. 3

If voltage is present but the valve doesn't shift, unplug the valve from the PCB.

  4. 4

Use an ohmmeter to check the solenoid coil for continuity. If resistance is out of spec, replace the coil.

  5. 5

Use a strong magnet along the valve body to check if the piston is stuck. If stuck, the valve must be replaced.
