Pump noise (low inlet pressure)

Noise in the pump - The pump's inlet pressure is too low

Grundfos · ALPHA3 Pump

What does Pump noise (low inlet pressure) mean?

The pump is generating noise, often a grinding or cavitation sound, because the water pressure at its inlet is below the recommended minimum level.

Common Causes

  • Insufficient overall system pressure.
  • A closed or partially closed valve on the suction (inlet) side of the pump.
  • Issues with the expansion tank, such as incorrect air volume.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Increase the overall inlet pressure in the heating system to the recommended level for optimal pump operation.

  2. 2

If an expansion tank is installed, check its air volume and ensure it is sufficient and correctly pre-charged.

  3. 3

Verify that all valves on the inlet side of the pump are fully open and not restricting flow.

  4. 4

Check for any blockages in the pipework leading to the pump inlet.
