H5 - IPM protection

GE Appliances · Air Conditioning

What does H5 mean?

IPM protection error means the drive processor's supply voltage is low, or the IPM module is malfunctioning. The system will shut down. This is displayed on the ODU main board LED.

Common Causes

  • Compressor 3-phase wire connection has open phase or is phase-reversed
  • System is overloaded and compressor current is too high
  • Drive board IPM module is damaged
  • Drive board IPM module’s 15V power supply is lower than 13.5V
  • Drive board 6-line PWM signal and the corresponding element are abnormal
  • Drive board compressor current sampling circuit element is damaged
  • Compressor is damaged

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check the compressor 3-phase wire connections for correct phase sequence. Reconnect wires if phased incorrectly.

  2. 2

Inspect if the system is overloaded; reduce load if possible.

  3. 3

Check the 15V power supply to the IPM module; ensure it is above 13.5V.

  4. 4

Replace the drive board if the IPM module or related circuits are suspected to be faulty.

  5. 5

Replace the compressor if it is damaged.
