HF29 — Cannot Detect Open Damper

Carrier · VVT-1T System

What does HF29 mean?

This error occurs when the slave thermostat attempts to open the damper blade but the position sensor does not indicate that the damper is in the full-open position. This suggests a mechanical or electrical issue preventing full opening.

Common Causes

  • Damper mechanical binding or obstruction.
  • Damper actuator is unable to modulate the damper open due to excessive static pressure.
  • Defective ZVS-01/VS airflow sensor or PS pressure sensor causing interference.
  • Loss of continuity in the green wire between the damper actuator and slave thermostat.
  • Misalignment between the damper and the actuator crankarm.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Check the damper for any mechanical binding or obstructions that might prevent it from opening fully. Remove any obstacles.

  2. 2

Verify that the damper actuator-to-damper alignment is correct. Ensure the damper and actuator both reach their fully open positions simultaneously.

  3. 3

Disconnect the slave thermostat from the wiring connector board. Manually turn the traveler screw on the stepper motor until the traveler arm is midway, then reconnect the slave thermostat.

  4. 4

Check the wiring between the damper actuator and slave thermostat, especially the green wire, for continuity. Connect the slave thermostat directly at the damper board to test the field wiring.

  5. 5

Check for excessive inlet static pressure that might exceed the damper actuator's rated ability.
