Error 85 — Compressor Temp Lockout

Carrier · Heat Pumps

What does 85 mean?

The system has entered a lockout state due to the compressor temperature being out of range multiple times (Error 59 or 71). The unit will attempt to ride through current spikes and self-recover, but persistent issues lead to this lockout.

Common Causes

  • Multiple Error 59 ('Compressor Scroll Temp Out of Range') within two hours
  • Multiple Error 71 ('Compressor Motor Temp Out of Range') within two hours

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Allow the system 240 minutes to attempt to recover. This is a prolonged lockout.

  2. 2

If the issue persists, contact a qualified technician to troubleshoot the underlying compressor temperature issues (refer to troubleshooting for Error 59 and 71).

  3. 3

Do not repeatedly reset the system without addressing the root cause, as it can cause further damage.
