Thermistor/OWI Failed Calibration — OWI sensor or drain hose check valve issue

Whirlpool · Washing Machines

What does Thermistor/OWI Failed Calibration mean?

The Optical Water Intelligence (OWI) sensor has failed calibration, or the drain hose check valve is not sealing properly, allowing dirty water to backflow.

Common Causes

  • OWI sensor failure or dirty lens
  • Drain hose check valve not sealing
  • Loose or faulty connections in the soil sensing circuit

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Run the Service Diagnostics to check OWI operation. It should detect low soil in clear water.

  2. 2

Clean the OWI lens surface if it appears dirty.

  3. 3

Disconnect the drain hose at the plumbing connection.

  4. 4

Elevate the hose above the dishwasher and fill it with water. If water flows back into the dishwasher, the drain loop needs replacement.

  5. 5

Unplug dishwasher or disconnect power and check connections in the soil sensing circuit.

  6. 6

After replacing the OWI sensor, run Diagnostics to force calibration on the next wash cycle.
