Grayed Clothes

Grayed Clothes - Use more detergent and appropriate water temperature

GE Appliances · Washing Machines

What does Grayed Clothes mean?

Clothes are appearing gray or faded. This can be due to insufficient detergent, incorrect water temperature, overloading, or improper use of water softeners.

Common Causes

  • Not enough detergent (larger loads, heavy soil, and hard water might require more detergent)
  • Water is not hot enough
  • Washer is overloaded
  • Soak time is too short
  • Soaking with too little detergent
  • Detergent is not dissolving

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Try using more detergent, especially for larger loads. If you have hard water, consider a water conditioner or softener.

  2. 2

Ensure water heater is delivering water at 48°C-65°C (120°F-150°F). Do not use the washer when hot water is needed for other purposes.

  3. 3

Make sure load/water level setting matches load size.

  4. 4

Soak for at least 30 minutes. Use more detergent for heavy soil.

  5. 5

Add detergent as the wash basket fills with water, before adding clothes.

  6. 6

To restore grayed clothes, try washing with hot water (if fabric allows) and add a non-precipitating water softener. Do not use detergent or soap. Soak clothes using a water softener for about 20 minutes.
